Chiara Bisagni - Invited speaker

Composite materials are now used more and more both in space and aeronautical structures. The first part of the lecture will illustrate the research conducted on buckling of composite cylindrical shells for space applications. Test results, as well as new design and optimization procedures considering artificial intelligence techniques, will be shown for shells scaled from launch vehicle structures. The second part of the lecture will present the research conducted on aeronautical composite stiffened panels. To contribute to a significant reduction of noise, NOX and CO2, it is necessary to open the design space and introduce innovative solutions for a significant weight reduction. The ongoing research will be presented where buckling is considered not always as a phenomenon to be avoided, but also as a new design opportunity to be explored for its ground-breaking potentialities. The last part will briefly introduce the research ongoing on thermal buckling of a composite plate, which at high temperature experiences a mode jump in its buckling shape. Applications of this new concept are studied to foster innovative applications for supersonic aircrafts.
