Complex Characteristic Impedance of Transmission Lines At High Frequencies

Activity: Talk or presentationTalk or presentation at a workshop, seminar, course or other meeting

Description

At high frequencies, i.e. when the transverse dimensions of a transmission line become significant in terms of wavelength, dynamic phenomena occur. In particular, radiative losses due to space- and surface-wave excitation become nonnegligible resulting in a complex characteristic impedance. In this contribution an equivalent network representation is introduced enabling to characterize transmission lines with a complex characteristic impedance. The presented equivalent network representation includes the effect due to the excitation by a Delta-gap source and uses the same characteristic impedance definition as for non-radiative modes.
