Geological formations containing oil and gas are heterogeneous and highly variable by nature and high hydrocarbon recovery factors may therefore be hard to achieve. Remaining reserves are more and more concentrated in increasingly more complex and challenging reservoirs. Moreover, oil and gas will continue to play an important role in the energy transition our global society is confronted with for a significant amount of time to come. Consequently, an in-depth knowledge and competence skill set is required of applied earth scientists to guarantee continued supply. This knowledge will also be critical for developing new technologies that aim to contribute to resolving our climate change issues, such as CO2 storage and the production of geothermal energy.
