Abstract
The ship recycling industry is vital for both the shipping industry and the waste recycling industry. On one hand, it helps renew the global fleet of ships and balance the demand and supply of ships in the freight market; on the other hand, it recycles millions of tonnes of scrap material and contributes to the sustainability. However, not much is written about it in the mainstream academic or research literature. This article, therefore, provides an extensive overview of the functioning of the ship recycling industry focusing on relevant regulations and material streams originating from end-of-life ships.
