    Abstract

The paper investigates the impact of distributed generators integration in Dutch Medium Voltage grids. Typical protection problems are described and analyzed. The current applied time-graded overcurrent protection scheme is evaluated and its shortcomings are highlighted. A new software algorithm for coordinating relays in any arbitrary network is proposed. The real hardware implementation of the protection scheme that makes use of an advanced sensor and microprocessor technology, and a communication infrastructure is explained in details. Simulation results reveal significant improvements in the protection speed performance and the DG during-fault availability.
