Abstract

Three types of mid-range approximations based on simplified numerical models are proposed to improve the convergence characteristics of a multipoint approximation method. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the approximations, they are tested on a simple dynamic optimal design problem. It is shown that the use of the simplified numerical model in the formulation of approximation functions makes it possible to improve the quality of the latter and to speed up the optimization process. Due to the generality of the proposed approximations they can be used for various optimization problems.
